A new study shows that a drug that targets an enzyme called PDE5 can cause more severe side effects.
In one study, researchers found that the drug, Viagra, caused more severe side effects such as painful sex and an increase in blood pressure.
“While Viagra is not a cure for erectile dysfunction (ED), it is a treatment for a number of conditions, including high blood pressure and erectile dysfunction,” says the study’s lead author, Professor Michael M. DeBartagnol, of the U. K.’s Department of Urology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
“Viagra works by blocking the enzyme that causes blood vessels to narrow. This is what causes a drop in blood pressure.”
The researchers also found that the drug caused a more severe side effect, increased blood flow to the genitals and caused an increase in the number of abnormal blood vessels.
Researchers found that men who took the drug had an increased risk of blood clots, stroke, heart attack, kidney disease, and a condition called atherosclerosis (swelling on the blood vessels).
“These results suggest that a medication like Viagra is a safe and effective treatment for erectile dysfunction,” DeBartagnol says.

DeBartagnol explains that ED can be caused by a number of factors. Some of these factors include diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking and obesity. Other factors include underlying conditions like cardiovascular disease and smoking. Finally, some people who take medications to treat ED are also at increased risk for high cholesterol, high blood pressure, high blood sugar and diabetes.

“The drugs are not an aphrodisiac or they are ineffective at improving erectile function in men,” Dr. DeBartagnol says. “It is a rare condition, but it can have a devastating effect on a man’s quality of life.”
